Video Cutting Tutorial

Accurate steps for Windows 11 and Windows 10.

How to Cut a Video on Windows 11 or 10

Video trimming removes unwanted time from the beginning, end, or middle of a recording. It is different from cropping, which removes pixels around the picture. This guide shows how to keep one exact segment and export it as a new file with Free Video Cutter Joiner.

Cut a video on Windows 11 by marking start and end points on a timeline
Keep the highlighted section between the start and end markers.
Before editing: keep the original video as a backup, check that you have enough free disk space, and decide whether you need only one segment or several separate clips.

Step 1: Add the video you want to cut

Launch Free Video Cutter Joiner. Choose Add and then Add File. Select your source video in File Explorer and choose Open. The file appears in the program list.

If you are preparing several clips, use Add Folder or Add Folder Tree. Importing multiple files does not cut them automatically; you can set different start and end points for each one.

Step 2: Mark precise start and end points

Select the source video and choose Cut to open the cutter. Play or scrub through the preview until you reach the first frame you want to keep, then choose Set this position as start. Move to the final frame you want and choose Set this position as end.

Use the one-second forward and backward controls for more accurate placement. Preview the selected range before continuing. Choose Save Changes when the markers are correct; use Reset Changes if you want to start over.

Step 3: Choose output settings and export

Select an output folder you can find easily. Choose an output format or a ready-made profile that matches the device or app where you will play the video. When compatibility matters, a widely supported MP4 profile is usually a practical choice.

Choose Encode to create the trimmed file. Do not close the program or move the source video while processing. When the progress finishes, choose Open and play the new file from beginning to end. Confirm that video and audio remain synchronized before deleting any source material.

Windows 11 built-in option vs. Free Video Cutter Joiner

Windows 11 includes Microsoft Clipchamp, which can trim a selected timeline clip by dragging its handles and can split clips at the playhead. It is a good choice when you also need titles, effects, or a multi-track project. Free Video Cutter Joiner is a focused desktop alternative when your main task is cutting, splitting, joining, or converting video files and you prefer not to sign in to an account.

Common video cutting problems

The exported video has the wrong beginning or ending

Reopen the cutter, zoom in conceptually by using the one-second controls, and move the start or end marker. Some formats seek between keyframes, so a small difference can occur around the chosen point after re-encoding.

The output file is much larger than the original

Check the selected profile, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. A higher bitrate or resolution produces a larger file even when the duration is shorter. Select settings close to the source unless you intentionally need a different format.

The program cannot open the source video

Copy the file to a local folder, confirm that it plays normally, and try again. A partially downloaded, encrypted, or damaged file may not decode. If the extension is unusual, convert a copy to a common format first.

Audio and video are out of sync

Try a different output profile and avoid changing the frame rate unless necessary. Test the source in another player to confirm that the synchronization problem is not already present.
